The Journal of Chinese Ritual, Theatre and Folklore (Min-su ch’ü-i 民俗曲藝) is published on a quarterly basis. The editorial board welcomes submissions of articles, field reports, or book reviews written in either Chinese or English on the following subjects: regional theatre, music, folklore, religion, and ritual. The guidelines listed below are for authors who submit manuscripts written in English. For information about manuscripts written in Chinese, please see our Chinese Guidelines (稿約) and Style Guide (撰稿體例).

1.  All submissions are subject to double-blind peer review. Authors will be notified of the results of the review process, but manuscripts will not be returned. Authors of published papers will be sent five copies of the Journal issue in which their paper appears and thirty offprint copies of the paper itself.

2.  All submissions must be works of original scholarship that have not been submitted elsewhere for publication.

3.  Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reprint copyrighted works, including charts, tables, photographs, maps, etc. The Journal is not responsible for copyright violations.

4.   In order to keep pace with advances in digital technology, as well as to ensure the widest possible circulation and citation of papers published in the Journal, the authors of any submissions that are accepted for publication will be asked to sign a document authorizing the Journal to grant non-exclusive license to third-party providers in order to allow their papers to be duplicated, publicly transmitted via the internet, downloaded, and printed by authorized users of those providers.

5.  In the interest of copyright privileges, while the author has the right to republish in a collection of his/her essays, no other party may reprint, translate, or otherwise utilize articles published in the Journal without written permission.

6.   The Journal’s upper limit for most submissions is 30 pages, double-spaced (Times New Roman, 12-point type). Exceptions can be made for works solicited by the editors.

7.   All submissions must be prepared using Microsoft Word. Please enclose a diskette or CD-ROM containing the file with the manuscript, or send the manuscript as an e-mail attachment to shihhoch@ms6.hinet.net.

8.   All authors should list their full names, addresses, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses on the first page of the manuscript.

9.  All submissions should include the following in both English and Chinese: manuscript title, author’s name, professional affiliation, 300-word abstract, and a list of five key words.

10. Chinese characters (traditional form only) and Japanese Kanji should be in large legible writing or produced by computer. For romanization, use Pinyin or Wade-Giles for Chinese; Hepburn or Nippon for Japanese.

11.Either humanities or social sciences notes are acceptable, but all submissions must contain a complete list of works cited, divided into “Primary Sources” and “Secondary Sources.” For examples of proper bibliographic style, please consult our Style Guide (撰稿體例).

12.In order to facilitate the review and editing process, please submit photocopies of all scripts or liturgical texts cited in the manuscript.

13. All photographs, slides, maps, and other illustrations must be clear. Authors who wish to submit electronic files must make sure that the images are clear. All illustrations should not exceed 15x21 centimeters in size. Illustrations that are unclear will be rejected.

14. All submissions should be sent to:
