Abstract
This paper describes the uses and meanings of a
special Zhuang bamboo basket and its contents in Jingxi County,
Guangxi Self-Governing Region. On the one hand, this Ɂɐn1kjoŋ5 bamboo basket is simply used for the transport of
rice and meat. On the other hand, however, this bamboo basket is an important
site for the expression of Zhuang notions of personhood. This article considers
two aspects essential to the Zhuang construction of persons as already
described in the extent Chinese-language scholarly literature: (1) fields (na) and (2) flowers (hua). This extent Chinese-language
literature describes fields and flowers each as at the center of a cultural
sphere. That is, in both the sphere involves the history and distribution of a
set of tightly integrated cultural concepts. The thesis of this paper is that
an examination of the cultural meanings pragmatic uses of Ɂɐn1kjoŋ5 bamboo baskets, their contents, and ritual uses shows
how the two spheres of fields and flowers are in fact connected. Most
specifically, this article shows that the connection between the two spheres
turns on the contrast between raw (fields) and cooked (flowers) and persons.
