Special Issue on “Musical Instruments, Material Culture, and Meaning: Toward an Ethno-Organology” (亞洲樂器、物質文化與意義:民族樂器學芻議)

"The idea for this volume came about during the conference in Rio de Janeiro in 2001 of the International Council for Tradition Music. Tsai Tsan-huang 蔡燦煌 and I presented papers in a session chaired by Margaret Kartomi, and a post-presentation discussion focused on musical instruments as meaningful objects of material culture. Both Tsai and I have undertaken research on instruments using anthropological approaches to material culture, and our aim in initiating this volume was to bring together articles on Asian instruments that stress the social dimensions of instrument meaning. Musical instruments are often studied in terms of their structure or acoustic properties, but these material objects commonly have intense meaning in a variety of ways in the lives of those who make and play them; they also often have particular cultural significance for other cultural insiders."
